Community leaders launch 'Niagara for 4' coalition

Two of Niagara County top elected officials, Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski and Niagara County Treasurer Kyle Andrews, have teamed up with the Niagara USA Chamber to launch the "Niagara for 4" coalition in support of a referendum on this year's ballot that would increase terms for county legislators to four years.

A notable penguin who made headlines five years ago as one of the first penguins to hatch at the Aquarium of Niagara in more than a decade is preparing for an exciting new chapter. Smitty, a Humboldt penguin who hatched in April 2020 alongside his sister, Jules, is moving to the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium as part of a coordinated effort among accredited zoos and aquariums to protect vulnerable species and maintain genetically diverse populations under human care.

Town of Niagara Supervisor Sylvia Virtuoso said at Tuesday's budget meeting that taxes may have to be raised over the 2% tax cap in order to provide residents with the services they need and expect. The municipality is faced with the need for two plow trucks and a ladder fire truck, and dealing with increasing health insurance costs.
