Niagara University accounting students offering free help for 2024 tax returns

It's tax season, and accounting students from Niagara University's Holzschuh College of Business Administration and members of its accounting society and Beta Alpha Psi will again provide members of the Niagara Falls community free tax preparation assistance through the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which offers free tax help for low- to moderate-income families, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and those with limited English proficiency.

Motor vehicle accident in Lewiston

At 8:41 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications division received a 9-1-1 call reporting a motor vehicle that had crashed into a house in the 400 block of Kenwood Drive. On arrival, deputies confirmed there were no injuries to either the occupants of the residence or the single occupant of the motor vehicle.

In November 2024, Jeff Williams, a member of Artpark & Company's board of directors for over seven years, challenged his fellow board members to join together and match contributions from the community to celebrate Artpark & Company's 50th anniversary. If Artpark could raise $50,000 in donations over the final 50 days of the calendar year, the board would match those contributions dollar for dollar.

The ceremony, held at the Tuscarora Heroes Monument on Center Street, marked 211 years since Tuscarora natives saved dozens of Lewiston settlers during a British attack in the War of 1812.

New police contract approved in Lewiston

When I took office on Jan. 1, 2016, I quickly learned that the current town and village police contract, which had been signed in 1995, had never been updated. There were several attempts by previous town and village boards to do so, but it was never finished. Although the original contract never officially "expired," it was meant to be renegotiated approximately every five years.

The Lewiston Christmas Walk weekend concluded Sunday night with the Lewiston Lights Parade down Center Street. This festive capper, organized by the Upward Niagara Chamber of Commerce, featured first responders, local businesses, dance and marching units, and, of course, Santa Claus.
