On Jan. 18, at approximately 12:44 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communication center received a 911 call reporting an abandoned dog in a dumpster behind Nelson's Café, 2298 River Road. Deputies responded and were able to retrieve the dog. The dog was turned over to the care of SPCA agent Rinehart.

Western District of New York United States Attorney Trini E. Ross announced Dewayne Vass, 43, of Buffalo, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra Jr. to possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl, which carries a minimum penalty of 10 years in prison, a maximum of life, and a $10,000,000 fine.

Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced James L. Allen, 69, of Buffalo, pleaded guilty yesterday afternoon before State Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Haendiges to one count of manslaughter in the first degree (class "B" violent felony). The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge in full satisfaction of the indictment.

Gov. Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced a jury found Eric M. Hawkins, 59, of Buffalo, guilty of one count of murder in the second degree (class "A-I" felony). Jurors rendered their decision yesterday afternoon after approximately three hours of deliberation following a three-day trial, convicting the defendant of the sole count of the indictment.

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced Om D. Samant, 36, of Amherst, was sentenced yesterday afternoon before State Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Haendiges to a determinate sentence of 10 years in state prison and five years post-release supervision. This was the minimum sentence authorized by the plea agreement and is what was being advocated for by the family of the victim.
